Billings TV station folds under Burns pressure

Friday’s edition of the Hotline, a publication of National Journal, reported on an exchange between KULR News, the NBC affiliate in Billings, and Tom (in the oven) Bunnell, campaign manager to U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns. It appears as though KULR buckled after Bunnell sent them a little nastygram over a promo they had been running. More of the same from Burns’ people: lies, threats, and intimidation. It’s too bad KULR doesn’t have the spine to stand up to them….

From the Hotline:

MONTANA: Fair Point, But Whatever Happened To Asking Nice The First Time?

Sen. Conrad Burns (R) manager Tom Bunnell "asked KULR-8 to immediately pull a promotional advertisement the station has been running, which doubles as an ad" for the MT Dem Party. In the promo, anchor Greg LaMotte says: "There are new and very serious accusations against Montana Senator Conrad Burns" over a picture of Burns. "The promotion plays multiple times per day, but it was not immediately clear how long it had been running."

Bunnell: "You provide no balance or context for those allegations in your advertisement. Instead you give these assertions credibility and free publicity by making a promo out of it that runs multiple times per day including during primetime. ... These actions demonstrate that your station may be infected with a rampant liberal bias that undermines your reporters and anchors claim to be objective in how they cover the election."

"Bunnell said the constant publicity raises the issue of whether or not the Senator should be given free air time to respond" to the ad (release, 3/30).

Bunnell, in a later release: "We appreciate KULR 8's decision to pull the advertisement in question for further review. This was a responsible decision that begins to restore our faith. Their commitment to objectivity and fairness is certainly evidenced by this decision" (3/30).

Infected with a rampant liberal bias? Come on now....
